I'm pleased to hear that DCC is working on a Harbour Plan in conjunction with ORC but I'm concerned that public interest groups do not have a voice in the process as was agreed when the plan was conceived prior to DCC and ORC long term plans.
please read my response to the next question for an example of the need for immediate action in this annual plan.
What other ideas should we be thinking about to include in future plans for our city?
I would like to see urgent redevelopment of the Back Beach area at Port Chalmers. This area has been under increasing pressure due to the arrival of commercial boat operators that are now using public amenities in the area. Increased cruise ship visitor numbers and the pending completion of the West Harbour cycle track will also add to the congestion next summer season. That congestion has lead to safety issues which have already been raised with the West Harbour Community Board and DCC Parks and Recreation, and the issues will only be worse next summer. The area is no longer fit for purpose and public use of the area can be unsafe when in use by commercial ventures.
This is an example of why DCC needs to progress its Harbour Plan and why it needs to be acted on as soon as possible.
